This annual fern dies down in summer. Most herbarium specimens have been collected in September and October. The species can be identified using vegetative characteristics.
Anogramma leptophylla grows in shallow soil layers over rock, on exposed or semi-exposed outcrops in dry or damp sclerophyll forest. Plants are mostly found on rock ledges, often on, or just inside, the drip line of the overhead rock-face. The substrate is variable, including dolerite, basalt and sandstone.
