This fern can be identified using vegetative characteristics. The species dies down in drysummers at some sites.
In Tasmania, the species occurs on exposed dolerite outcrops in dry sclerophyll forest in areas of low rainfall between 450 and 680 m above sea level. Plants grow on northwest to northeast facing outcrops in the shallow soil of crevices or sloping rock platforms.
