Frankenia pauciflora var. gunnii is the only member of its family (Frankeniaceae) in Tasmania. The presence of flowers aids the detection of this small, much branched creeping perennial undershrub. Flowering occurs over most of the year (Flora of Victoria) though most Tasmanian herbarium specimens have been collected in November to December.
In Tasmania, Frankenia pauciflora var. gunnii is restricted to coastal areas, occurring on exposed granite in the spray zone, usually on the north and north-western shores (Furneaux Group islands) and in salt marshes (Short and Harcus Islands in Robbins Strait on the north-west coast).
