Flowers are required for the identification of this ground orchid which dies back to subterranean tubers after flowering. In Tasmania surveys for Thelymitra mucida should be undertaken during November, its peak flowering period, ideally in hot weather when its flowers are most likely to be open. The species may not flower or emerge every year.
In Tasmania, recent collections indicate that Thelymitra mucida is most strongly associated with winter-wet sedgy heathlands at low elevations in near-coastal sites.
